Breakfast at The Delaunay, 55 Aldwych, London

On a couple of occasions now I have “asked Twitter” where I can get the best breakfast in London. The Delaunay at 55 Aldwych (near Drury Lane, Covent Garden) featured in many of the replies.

Having taken Twitter’s advice, I can concur that their breakfast and the venue itself is indeed pretty special... (If you don't mind rubbing shoulders with banker types.)

Brought to us by the same people who operate The Wolsey and Brasserie Zedel, The Delaunay is another European style café restaurant on a grand scale.

The grandiose décor features marble floors and tabletops, wood panels and British racing green leather upholstery. I also love the quality linen napkins and heavy silver salt and pepper shakers.

To start, I had Pancakes with maple syrup. Dusted in icing sugar, these were a good size and pillowy but I’ have liked them and the accompanying syrup to have been served warmer.

For my main, I opted for the delicious Eggs Arlington. Served on a soft, light muffin with folds of good quality smoked salmon with a perfectly poached, poached egg and a wonderfully rich and tangy hollandaise - real treat for breakfast.

For dessert, a flaky Pain au Chocolat that exploded as I bit into it scattering shards of pastry in every direction (just as they should do).

To drink, I had a very good Milchkaffee (essentially German for Cappuccino) and some Grapefruit Juice - I’d have liked the juice to have been freshly squozen but this is a minor gripe.

Whether you are live nearby, work in the area or are visiting a breakfast at The Delaunay has to be a great way to start your day.
