When planning where to eat in KL (aside from the “street food” see here) there was only one restaurant on my ‘must do’ list… the restaurant widely regarded as Malaysia’s best - Cilantro.
Housed within the MiCasa All Suite Hotel, Cilantro is a French restaurant that makes use of Asian ingredients - particularly those from Japanese chef, Takashi Kimura’s homeland.
Cilantro has twice been listed in the Miele guide’s list of the Asia’s Top 20 Restaurants (at No.8 in 20122 and No.6 in 2012) but it dropped out of the 2013 rankings.
We opted for the Dégustation Menu.
Bread with Black Truffle Butter and Amuse Bouche (the butter was the highlight of the meal)
Confit of Foie Gras with Brioche
Capellini with Abalone (undoubtedly the stand out dish)
Lightly Smoked Ocean Trout with Asparagus
Lobster & Sakuraebi Soup
Wild Bar (Sea Bass) Fillet with Leek Etuvée & Sliced Hotate (Scallop)
French Veal with Jus
Grilled Wagyu with Mushrooms
Crème d’Anjou with Raspberry Sorbet
Chocolate Soufflé Renverse with Caramel & Chestnut Cream
The meal, setting and service were all good but I do not feel as though Cilantro is on a par with high-end restaurants in, say, neighbouring Singapore or the UK – if we were to return to KL, we would probably stick to the “street food” and casual dining venues.
