Elkano, Getaria #OneMichelinStar

Last time we visited the region we visited Kaia Kaipe (here) – this time, we managed to secure a reservation at their Michelin starred sister restaurant, Elkano.

Both places are renowned for their large exterior charcoal grills, on which they expertly grill meats and more famously whole fishes and meat – most notably turbots.

What Michelin say, ‘Professionally run with excellent maintenance. It has a small waiting area with a bar and a marine-style dining room that is enhanced by an excellent table service.

Necora (Velvet crab)

Changurro al horno (baked txangurro – spider crab)

Robadillo parrilla (grilled turbot)

Bar Nestor, Donostia-San Sebastián

Bar Nestor (Calle Pescaderia, 11) – we love Bar Nestor, so much so that we headed straight there the night we arrived in San Sebastian and returned for a final meal just before we left a week later.

The monster bone in sirloin ‘Txuleta steaks, from OAP dairy cows, what most people go for but Nestor are also famous for their dustbin lid sized ‘Tortilla’.

They make two a day – one is served at 1pm & the other at 8pm. You need to arrive a good half hour plus beforehand to put your name down for a piece - then hang around. This way, you’ll also have a seat for when the kitchen opens & steak orders are taken.

They also offer a tomato salad & fried peppers, although these are not sides (they will be cleared before your steak arrives).

Guinea Grill, London

Guinea Grill is old school. It’s proper.

The steaks are some of the best in London. The pies are some of the best in the world.

On my visit I felt the puddings were a little weak, so my advice is full up on the steak and pies.
