I do recall that the starter was quite good, the main course average but the cheese board (which was a ridiculous price) featured a particularly rancid piece of cheddar and a couple of other flavourless lumps. There was a selection of one type of biscuit. My wife like you, chose the sticky toffee pudding. It was rather hard, suspect it may have spent too long in the microwave.

Then the entertainment began. It was about 20 minutes until our plates were taken. We got the usual "was everything OK with your meal?". I don't usually bother making negative observations, preferring to vote with my feet but I said very politely that the cheeseboard was disappointing and that the pudding was hard. The gentleman said that he'd talk to someone. We waited a further 20 minutes for both a response and the bill that we'd asked for and eventually got bored. We went to the bar and asked to pay and mentioned to the barman that we'd made an observation about our meal but had no response. At this point I turned around and saw our waiter and a man I now know is Mr Pilling having a stand up row in front of Mr Pilling's Lectern. The waiter gently pointed at us during their chat, so I assume we were the topic of conversation.

Their debate carried on for a good few minutes, so know completely bored I scribbled my address and mobile number on a serviette and handed it to Mr Pilling asking him to send the bill to me, again politely but perhaps with a little sarcasm.

On the drive home I received a text from Mr Pilling saying that I knew nothing about cheese and that we were barred. I have never received a bill. We returned to our local, which incidentally is also a Gastro pub, where they tend to handle complaints in a more traditional manner. This tale is folklore in the kitchen there, and you can see the fear on their faces when I order cheese.Mr Hallamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8413854587296254847.post-10513292921245707782013-02-12T19:31:04.919+00:002013-02-12T19:31:04.919+00:00Ah... shame you didn't say hello. I hope to get along to the new Damson soon and give a more positive write up to Mssrs Pilling and Stanley.

I don't dislike the idea of a supplement (after all, I ordered bot of the dishes with them) but I do like to feel I am still getting value for money.
Hungry Hosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11066886383588886187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8413854587296254847.post-30417641578765551522013-02-12T17:14:52.532+00:002013-02-12T17:14:52.532+00:00I spotted The Hoss, I want to claim my prize.

I thought it might be you but I wasn't sure and would not have wanted to disturb someone. From your post I realise now it was you and would have liked to have said hello.

The Red Lion was not quite on form on Sunday and I was surprised not to see Mr Pilling on his usual patrol of the floor. I too dislike supplements. It's nice to know people read stuff and don't just click here by mistake ;-)

When you come up to the NW let me know if I can be of any further help :-)Hungry Hosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11066886383588886187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8413854587296254847.post-38420055530952457352013-02-10T18:57:39.772+00:002013-02-10T18:57:39.772+00:00I'm with you on not understanding certain supp...I'm with you on not understanding certain supplements. Recently ate at Lumiere in Cheltenham, all lovely except for one oddity. We chose the expensive 3 course a la carte instead of the cheaper 3 course set menu. When Maureen asked for the dessert from the set menu they provided it without a quibble... and stuck a £3 supplement on the bill!

Anyway, that list of pubs at the top of your post is useful, as we might be wandering the NW some time soon. : )Matthewhttp://saltyplums.co.uknoreply@blogger.com
